“He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them;
and His Mother kept all these things in Her Heart.”

Luke 2:51

The Holy Family of Nazareth is the model of the Christian family; it is a school of deep sanctity, as all of the recent Popes have reminded us, such as in these words from St John Paul II –

“Today, in the joyful atmosphere of Christmas, the Church, reliving with fresh wonder the mystery of Emmanuel, God-with-us, leads us to contemplate the Holy Family of Nazareth. From contemplation of this admirable model, the Church draws the values to hold up to the women and men of all times and all cultures.” (Angelus address, 27th December 1998)

 What are those ‘values’ of which the Holy Father speaks? They are nothing less than all the Christian values in their entirety, by the living out of which we move forwards on the path to true sanctity; and in this way, we begin to respond to the universal call to holiness, which was emphasised at the Second Vatican Council.

Just today, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, said this –

“May Jesus, Mary and Joseph bless and protect all families around the world, so that love, joy and peace may reign within them.”

May all of us echo these words and ask the heavenly blessing of the Holy Family of Nazareth, that we might be given the graces we need to properly model ourselves and our own families on Them, and be greatly blessed by Them.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
I give You my heart and my soul.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
assist me in my last agony.

Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
may I breathe forth my soul in peace with You.
